PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear distinguished scientists and researchers, professors and faculty members, students, partner institutions, and all those who are working together to shape the future of science and education in Mongolia,
It is my great pleasure to extend my warmest greetings to you.
The University of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (UMAS) was established pursuant to Resolution No. 214 of the Government of Mongolia in 2024, with the mission of developing highly qualified human resources in priority fields of science and technology and strengthening Mongolia’s national research and development capacity.
Education, science, and innovation are three inseparable pillars of a knowledge-based society. Education develops human intellectual capacity and lays the foundation for knowledge creation. Science generates new knowledge and opens new possibilities, providing the intellectual foundation for national development. Innovation, in turn, transforms knowledge and research outcomes into practical solutions, technologies, and social and economic value. Thus, education nurtures knowledge, science creates knowledge, and innovation transforms knowledge into development.
Guided by this principle, UMAS is advancing toward its vision of becoming an internationally recognized advanced research university dedicated to educating and developing a new generation of scientists, researchers, and highly qualified professionals who will contribute to the advancement of science, technology, and innovation in Mongolia.
Our educational philosophy is built around a complete knowledge-management cycle: learning through research, creating new knowledge, and transforming that knowledge through innovation into practical solutions and societal value. In this environment, students are not merely recipients of existing knowledge; they become creators of knowledge and developers of innovation.
The UMAS educational model is structured around 70 percent research and 30 percent classroom-based learning. Every student participates in real research projects under the supervision of scientists and faculty members actively engaged in research and development projects. Through laboratory and field research, students are given the opportunity to develop their research outcomes into scientific publications, technologies, and innovative solutions.
UMAS is not a conventional university confined to a single campus or classroom. Rather, it is built upon a distinctive model of “One University – Multiple Institutes and Centers – An Integrated Education and Research Ecosystem.” The 16 research institutes, 173 laboratories, 7 national centers, and 45 experimental and field research stations of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences provide our students with extensive opportunities to work in real research environments, participate in national and international projects, and develop advanced knowledge and research skills.
The mission of UMAS extends beyond awarding academic degrees. It is to educate a new generation of professionals, scientists, researchers, and leaders capable of identifying Mongolia’s pressing challenges through scientific inquiry and addressing them through research, new knowledge, and innovative solutions.
Under our guiding principle, “Research-Based Education – Innovation-Driven Development,” we are committed to building, together, a new model of research university for Mongolia, grounded in the intellectual capacity and research resources of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences and aligned with international standards.
I invite you to join the UMAS academic community and work together with us in shaping the future of science and education in Mongolia.
Sincerely,
Battogtokh Dorjgotov, ScD, Professor
President
University of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (UMAS)
